Discover the Secrets and History of the 1840’s Stone Mansion

Meet 824 Lincoln Way East...

PAST... Looking for a taste of history and some serious charm? Look no further than this stunning Romanesque house built in the 1840’s by Mr John Long just before the Civil War. According to the 1850 Census, the address at that time was 248 East Main Street.

This masterpiece features locally-sourced sandstone, a grand wraparound front porch with a circular gazebo area and boasts a whopping 4,000 square feet inside with five fireplaces. The interior is just as impressive, with a wood-paneled foyer featuring hand-carved trim and a beautiful main staircase. The first two floors offer four private dining areas. The third floor Overlook Lounge is pretty amazing with stunning vaulted ceilings and secret prohibition-era liquor cabinets hidden in benches. The atmosphere is cozy and upscale.

Over the years, it’s been home to a number of different families, each leaving their mark on the property. After John Long and his family lived there, the house was purchased by John and Mary Clay in 1884. John, a retired farmer, was 31 years older than his wife and had several stepchildren. Unfortunately, he died shortly after the purchase, but Mary continued to live in the house until 1900.

In 1900, William and Laura Humberger became the new owners, with William owning the Humberger Dry Goods store in Massillon. After William’s passing, Laura remained in the house until 1911. J.E. O’Hearne, an employee of the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad, lived in the house from 1911 until 1915, during which time the address changed to 1218 East Main Street. In 1915, C. Cline of C. Cline & Company, a manufacturer of hair good products, moved in.

In the early 1920’s, the home was purchased by Blaine Zuver, Treasurer and General Manager of the Enterprise Aluminum Company. Blaine passed away on April 8, 1941 and his wife Alma lived in the house until 1948. Alma died in March of 1973 and both Alma and Blaine are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Massillon. During the late 1920’s a coast-to-coast highway known as the Lincoln Highway ran through Massillon, leading to Main Street being renamed Lincoln Way. As a result, the Zuver’s address became 824 Lincoln Way East, which is the current address.

In 1948, Dr. Fredrick Lauster, a local Massillon dentist, purchased the property and used the first floor as his dental office, with his residence believed to be on the second floor. Dr. Lauster lived in the home until 1993.

In 1993, Anthony and Beverly DeRenzo purchased the house. They raised their family and lived here until 2002.

In 2002, the Stone House found its current owners in Jeff and Sandy Doll. Jeff’s unwavering commitment to preserving the historical charm of the home led him to spend years renovating it with meticulous attention to detail. Fast forward to August, 2019, Sandy, a community volunteer, transformed the property into Social at the Stone House Event Center. However, when the pandemic hit in 2020, Sandy was determined to create a restaurant concept that would truly stand out. After months of careful planning, Social at the Stone House Restaurant welcomed their first guests in July of 2021.

PRESENT... Step into the world of Social at the Stone House...an upscale neighborhood concept that offers a truly unique experience. Drawing inspiration from fusion cuisine, Social’s carefully curated menu boasts creative menu options, craft cocktails and an extensive wine list. Social is also an ode to Sandy’s deep passion for the magical world of Halloween, with the skull motif a playful nod to the holiday’s mystique, adding an extra touch of wonder to this already enchanting place.

Some visitors have whispered tales of the house being haunted, citing a shooting and suicide that occurred in 1974. While the validity of these stories remains up for debate, one fact remains certain, this house is brimming with history and character.
